Time to Embrace Your Inner Hero
"A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself." Joseph Campbell
Pause to reflect on the quote above, and you’ll realize you have many heroes in your life today, even if you haven’t necessarily given them this label. And whether you are aware of it or not, there are likely others who identify you as a hero as well.
In talking with colleagues, it has been interesting to learn the various responses to the designation of “hero” that has been given to us in many communities for our work during the COVID-19 pandemic. While it certainly has been inspiring to see healthcare workers, particularly in COVID “hot spots,” be recognized and thanked for their tireless and courageous work, the most common response I’ve received from colleagues has been discomfort and even a bit of embarrassment. As one colleague indicated, “I’m doing my job and feel privileged to have the opportunity to do it surrounded by so many other incredible people.”
And yet, what this pandemic has done is provided the opportunity for each of us to reach a little deeper into our character and bring our “A game” – our unique gifts and best self – to the world in a whole new way at a time when it is needed more than ever. Some have dubbed these unique gifts our “Superpowers.”
I really like the idea that when we are giving our life to something bigger than our self, we are expressing a superpower and are truly heroes. Which means there’s a hero in all of us.
How will you express your “superpower” today? The world eagerly awaits.
